Did you know?

Every day people are forced to leave their native land by war, conflict, insecurity or natural disasters to seek refuge in Uganda. As they find a temporary rescue they yet face greater challenges as they become highly dependent on the generosity of humanitarian aid for their survivors and livelihood. And in most cases humanitarian assistance cannot sufficiently provide for them. Uganda hosts more than 1.5 million refugees and asylum seekers. The majority of the refugees are from South Sudan, DRC and Burundi.. COVID-19 restrictions have left many refugees without livelihoods and income, pushing them deeper into poverty, hunger and more vulnerable. Plethora Social Initiative is compelled to empower every refugee and host community to participate actively in shaping their own destinies fostering inclusivity and catalyzing positive change with lasting solution, shift away from the dependence on humanitarian aid, and start creating ways to become independent and self-reliant as a Refugee community.

WHAT WE DO

PERMACULTURE

Our Permaculture Empowerment Program for Refugees is a comprehensive initiative designed to equip refugees with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to create sustainable and resilient communities within refugee settlements. By integrating permaculture principles with hands-on training, community engagement, and empowerment, this program aims to address food insecurity, promote environmental sustainability, and foster self-reliance among refugee populations. Refugees in settlements and host communities by offering a permaculture and whole system design course. Our goal is to create an abundant local human habitat that provides for all people while still protecting and regenerating the natural environment. The training starts with learning about plants and expands into every aspect of people’s lives. We use this course as a tool to build long-term resilience, increase food security and introduce diverse, abundant and nutritious sources of food grown locally. The students selected for each training cohort go through a learning journey that includes implementation of design principles, an innovative approach towards intensive food production, an exploration of land and other resources, and learning about sustainable livelihoods.
